Running Rebels face Illinois in NCAA tourney opener
By Bud L. Ellis
Coming into the NCAA tournament, the University of Nevada-Las Vegas Running Rebels are one of the hotter teams in the field.
UNLV has won 10 of its past 13 games, and looks to be another team from the Mountain West Conference to make some noise in the Big Dance.
The Running Rebels open NCAA play as the eighth seed in the Southwest regional in Tulsa, against No. 9 seed Illinois on Friday. The winner likely gets top seed Kansas in the third round.
UNLV’s six-game winning streak ended in the semifinals of the Mountain West tournament to sixth-ranked San Diego State, the Running Rebels falling 74-72 on Friday. The only other two losses for UNLV since Jan. 20 are to the Aztecs and No. 10-ranked BYU.
Senior guard Tre’Von Willis leads the Running Rebels in scoring at 13.5 points per game. Willis is an 83 percent shooter from the free-throw line.
