Late 3-pointer sends UNLV out of NCAAs
By Bud L. Ellis
Oscar Bellfield got the look he wanted. He got the result UNLV wanted. But at the end, it wasn’t enough.
The Runnin’ Rebels tied their first-round game in the NCAA Tournament on Bellfield’s 3-pointer with 37 seconds left. But Northern Iowa responded with a 3-pointer from Ali Farokhmanesh with 4.9 seconds to go, ending the Rebels’ season in a 69-66 loss Thursday in the Midwest Regional in Oklahoma City.
UNLV (25-9) had one last chance, but could not get off a shot before the buzzer.
It was a frustrating night on offense for the Rebels, who failed to score 70 points for just the 10th time this season. Northern Iowa slowed the tempo, and UNLV shot just 43 percent from the field.
Matt Shaw scored a team-high 14 points, 12 in the first half. Tre’Von Willis and Bellfield added 13 points each.
